= Noob here: Is there any guide to setup a 24/7 plex server, along with Windows 10 and Hackintosh as VMs (bare metal)? =

I had a question regarding having a dual boot setup (win 10 for gaming - hackintosh for productivity) on a pc (i9-9900k - rx480 8gb) that should be running 24/7 as a file -and media- server.

My first plan was to just install the two OSs and switch between them when needed, but I got many recommendation on using Proxmox to do all this. Also, I'm consirened about power consumption, so would Proxmox use less power than windows 10 as a server?

I'm totally new to proxmox, my current server setup is Docker on Windows 10. It was challenging to learn, but I'm happy to invest time learning new stuff, including linux and VMs.

I'm here to ask for guidenes, where to go to get guides, tutorials, and forums that can help with my learning. Thanx

There's multiple guides available out there to help you setup a proxmox server and probably another ton of guide for a windows VM

Here's a first one for Proxmox: httpslinustechtips.com/topic/1083818-a-beginners-guide-to-proxmox/

I don't think Proxmox will use less power than your dual boot setup. If both VMs never run at the same time (it wouldn't work with GPU passthrough anyway), you are probably gonna use a similar amount of electricity

What Proxmox will solve here, is the need for a plex server running all the time while you want to dual boot.

One challange will be to passthrough the GPU. It highly depends on your graphic card. Some will works nicely, some will not work at all. Then, you'll need to access proxmox's CLI or GUI to switch between VMs. You'll need to stop one VM than start the other, so you'll need to use another computer to do that.

Personally, for Gaming purpose, I would probably not do this.

Hope this answers your questions

I have this kind of setup. If you ask here for advice i would also advice against Proxmox as gaming VM. First it can be a hassle to set up the gpu, especially with the AMD reset bug, but also it sometimes is hard to maintain, if u dont have any knowledge about it.

Proxmox VE is a hypervisor that is installed bare metal. You would then create a VM for your media server. I personally created an Ubuntu VM with Docker containers running Emby, Radarr, Sonarr, Prowlarr, Bazarr, NZBGet, and Transmission + OpenVPN connected to PIA. I have a Nvidia Quadro P2000 passthrough for Emby 4k transcoding.

You could then create a Windows VM for gaming but would probably want a Nvidia 30X0 passthrough for that.

You could also forget about the transcoding GPU passthrough if your clients (Firestick 4k, Shield Pro, etc) can Direct Play your media.

You might find this useful, not sure if he had done any more guides recently, might be worth having a look : httpswww.nicksherlock.com/2021/10/installing-macos-12-monterey-on-proxmox-7/
