= Questions on game world when renting a dedicated Valheim server =

Last time I played Valheim was before the hearth and home update. I would like to rent a dedicated server this time so my friends can all play when my PC is not on. So I just have a few questions -
I know that game/mob difficulty is adjusted by how many players are actively in the game/area…So what happens when nobody is logged into the server? Do events still happen even though no player is there to defend against them?
When a server rental service says you can rent up to X number of slots does that mean how many people can actively be playing or how many player profiles are stored on the server?
Is it possible to give certain players “admin control” or do you need direct access to the server rental for that?
For those who have gone from locally hosting to renting a dedicated server - what are the biggest pros/cons that you’ve experienced?
I’m sure you all saw this coming but - What rental service do you recommend SPECIFICALLY for Valheim?

I rented a server for my friends for a while. Cant realy say what the best company is to use since I only have experience with one but I used G-portal. There service is excellent and came highly recommended. $15 a month for 10 slots. And that's 10 on at a time not just profiles. You can bump it up to max of 200 for like a dollar something a slot I think. You can also set it to pause the server when no one is on so nothing willyour base while no one is there. It also allows for the use of Valhiem+ mod and has pretty much all the same settings you can adjust on a single player game. If you add the mod everyone playing must have it installed on their pc also, but the server setting will override personal settings. So everyone will have the same setting playing on the server

How that helps. Hit me up if you have any questions and I'll see if I can answer

Several answers already, but here is another list:
Game time stops when no one is on the server. It might be possible to change that, but it's not a simple config option

2. 'Slots' could mean a lot of things. My guess would be active connections (players connected to the server). Player data is NOT saved on servers in Valheim, so it wouldn't be anything to do with that

3. Not 100% certain, but as far as I know only the server has admin control. No ways to add to that list

4. Well, I went the other way around. Used dedicated at first, now I have a machine running it at home. It's nice being able to add any mods

5. Not a lot of experience with the options, but I used Bisect Hosting for 3 months. Had zero issues with it and they even gave me a credit when I shutdown the server mid-billing cycle

You can give other players "admin" rights on a dedicated server. There's a file that you put their Steam ID into and they can ban, unban, etc

I'm on Bisect Hosting as well. They are great. For me, I think the main limitation is build size and memory. If you have too much going on for the servers to handle, they'll freeze up. When it happened to me they immediately bumped up my memory to see if it helped, and got me going with a slightly more expensive plan. On a Saturday night

I didn't notice much of a jump in difficulty. However, if no one is logged in, mobs won't spawn/aggro onto your stuff. It also seems Fuel (fire wood) for fires doesn't burn, so it seems it's kind of on pause when the world/zone is empty

No idea

For our setup it certainly is possible

Playing on a pretty bad wireless connection (would require 15m~ ethernet cable due to layout of our house) I have had some connection issues I have not previously experienced; sometime abasically teleports a few meters, which can be quite fatal. Parries not landing when they should. Also, sometimes when sailing, even in calm waters, the boat will take 10 damage and 'rubberband' a bit - this seems to be latency/desynch related, based on google searches. My ping invariably and purportedly stays between 15-30, which should not cause any such issues. Pros - a lot more flexible since it's up all the time, and resource gathering is a whole lot nicer with this many people compared to single player or the fact that all of us could not get the timing right for playing on locally hosted servers

A friend set up a server for free via Oracle Cloud - there is a nicely detailed thread on how to accomplish this on this subreddit, posted maybe 1-2 months back. Lots of awards, and justly so. Would recommend looking into that

From my experience
When no player is logged in, the server goes to sleep,
Nothing spawns and the day doesn't continue to run
The player's profile are stored on the client side and not on the server. Most of those question are more how many active players will you have at the same time, default is 10 players, if you guys are playing more than 4 peps, you might need to upgrade

Haven't tried to grant admin yet, but the hosting company I picked, you can add specific player I'd to become admins, they don't need access to the server controls at all, so only admins in game

Biggest con, only if you pick a bad hosting company, the desync can be quite bad. Like one guy fighting a mob, but on your end it looks like the mob is so far away. You can sometime add wood to the charcoal but the amount in the charcoal does not change, but items are lost from the inventory. A fun glitch on a bad server, you can sometimes add more than 10 ores into the melters, i think our max was 13/10 at some point. Get a proper server and you won't see these issues

Biggest downside for both good and bad servers, I haven't figured a way to add your server to a favourite list in game yet, in order to quick join. So I always join by direct IP, it does however remember your last IP joined

5. I've tried a two different hosting companies, but so far 1G server hosting is hands down giving me the best value for money and their support team are crazy good! You get by default a NVME slot instead of an ssd (this cost extra on other hosting companies) You get a 5,2Ghz server vs 3,5 or 3,8 on other rented servers, so far me and my friends haven't seen any desync issues and the in-game performance is like you where hosting the server yourself

I tried the 4netplayers rented server, and they have aton of desync issues like the ones I listed in point 4, plus their control platform is really bad compared to the 1Gs

But that's one man's opinion out of two companies at least

Oh a little side note.. a lot of dedicated servers supports mods and has a easy way to add them :)
*So what happens when nobody is logged into the server?*
I've been wondering this myself. I've been thinking of setting up a server for my co-workers who would play basically once a week

Oh, and if you have a good site for renting a server, I'd like to hear it - my internet connection is unreliable and my computer makes too much noise for me to sleep with it on, so me hosting is a no-go

When nobody is on the server there is no progression. On mine the cops/tamed animals etc do notor anything like that. The server host i use is ChicagoServers, it is 15 bucks a month though. I believe its worth it since they are extremely professional and when I first joined up I had trouble transferring my old save from the local dedicated over and they replied to my issue literally within minutes and it was taken care of within the hour (there was some additional issues) I have gotten 0 lag at all whatsoever, in fact no problems at all with the server. I do live in Chicago though lol
Hey there, technology consultant here!

Currently running an open community server you and your friends are welcome to join at valheim.capital

Looking to open up more resources as interest in the project builds

Personally, at least with my expertise, I wouldn't use a mass commercial host when you can roll your own for much better performance and control

Obviously costing is higher, but the experience will be better

I have already gotten compliments on our servers operation

Absolutely noticed mobs get harder in proximity to other players

Have experienced some tough assault events

Cant really comment on the other questions, have not dived into admin controls too much honestly in game on the dedicated host, only on server console or in single player, nor have I used a 3rd party host service

Enjoy your journey in the game, hope for you to stop by our part of the realm!
With some hosting companies you can create sub users and give them as many rights as you want to the server controls. You can make them a full admin or pick and choose which rights they have - for example you could just give them the ability to restart the server, perform a steam update, backup the world, etc

I use Gtxgaming btw. Been using them for several years and never had any issues. They're a UK based provider, but they have servers all over the world. I'm in US and was able to pick a US server pretty close to me
