= Experiences with OVH bare metal servers =

Just curious as to the experiences with the OVH bare metal servers that people may have had - both good and bad

I am an experienced sysadmin
*and* developer looking to set up a virtualized platform on one unit to host multiple various guest systems (Windows for DotNet, Linux for PHP/Python, BSD for other stuff, etc Right now I’m looking at a 4c8t system with 32G of memory for $49CDN/mo., and at that price I’d beto continue paying $105CDN/mo to Vulture for three piddly little VPS’. I’ll eventually get a second matching box to create a cluster so that VMs can be mirrored for redundancy, but I’m starting out slow

Very very bad support response time for HDD failure or hardware failure in general in the EU data centers. I've had an HDD fail and it took them 2 weeks to replace it, I've ended up moving to another server because of this. Hetzner on the other hand (similar pricing in EU) replace failed disks on the same day

If something is wrong and you can't fix it yourself from rescue mode you are pretty muchand have to wait a week or two. This is the main consideration for picking a more responsive provider. For instance if VT is disabled in BIOS you need support to turn it on, be prepared to wait a few days

Also, you are of course not guaranteed to get new hardware, most likely it would be an old machine, with 1-3 year old disks. If the disks are SSD they may well be quite worn out

Check out the hardware -- it’s a few years old, so it's probably dirt cheap. Plus spinning rust drives when everyone else is going SSD. Not something I would want to have a performance VM running on, but good enough until the sites I am going to build start bringing in the passive revenue to justify something shinier

It would be useful if you could link to the specific server you're talking about, the devil os normally in the detail

If the server doesnt have SSD then pay extra for it if you can, Disk IO is likely to be your limiting factor. Also monitor the RAID the status. OVH may not be doing this for you, it's will be up to you to request a disk change if you need one

I had a pretty good experience with them. I had an SSD based VPS at their datacenter in Eastern Canada. There was only one outage the whole year and that was some bozo cutting a cable in a tunnelthey had it back in a couple of hours. I admit though, that I was just experimenting and didn't utilize the full potential of the thing

The only reason why I cannot even consider an SSD variant is because of my storage requirements. I do intensive partitioning on my Linux systems for security reasons (log bombs, etc.) and with my eMail systemsup at least 20Gb for the raw data alone, it means that any Linux system with cPanel/WHM (so: hosting as well) needs a 90Gb VM,
*minimum*. Especially if I don’t want to leave any one partition unreasonably cramped. That doesn’t leave much elbow room for more than just another VM or two on a 200Gb (RAID1) SSD. So the 2Tb or 3Tb systems will have to do, even though they’re high-latency spinning rust

Its seems they are really hit or miss on support. A lot of people have had issues with the support. I never have. I think ive been using them for over 10 years. The only major issue i had was a PSU failing during the night, they replaced it before i had even seen their intervention emails in the morning

OVH are ok if you don't need much support. Though they have just increased their prices by 20% for UK customers

Not sure if that affects your budget now or not?
