So I shipped off to basic combat training for the army, and 6 months later when I’m ready to graduate I found out a new account had been opened up that I didn’t know about. My credit score dropped significantly. There was $701 worth of charges. I called the company to see what happened and they told me my mother was an authorized user on the account. They read me what the charges were and I knew it was her. How thecan somebody open up a whole account without me knowing? She’s always had financial issues since her divorce and is constantly in some sort of debt. Anyways, my credit has been negatively affected and the account became delinquent. Any advice on what I should do here? I don’t want her to get in trouble but I can’t let my credit be affected by charges that aren’t mine

Yes, OP, you need to get yourin trouble. Having delinquent debt won’t only affect your credit rating it can impact your military career. I would ensure your command knows what happened (to avoid negative inferences wrt your credit report) and let yourknow she needs to pay it off immediately so you can close the card otherwise you will make an identity theft report.

You're in the Army yes? Something I'm not seeing anyone else mention here so I will (retired Army Officer), you need to follow the advice about reporting her to the police and disputing the charges but you also need to inform your chain of command so as to get in front of it. In the future, if you are investigated for a security clearance, especially a high security clearance, and when you come up for promotion to Sergeant or above, especially if you are looked at for any kind of officer candidate program, or if you try to get into some of the really high tech fields, this will count against you if you don't get it fixed. Unpaid debts and perceived money issues will literally get you denied for higher level security clearances and positions because it is seen as a possible avenue for extortion and blackmail by foreign agencies. Even if such things are not something you are looking at in your future, creditors contacting your chain of command with get you on your commander's and First Sergeant'slists fast. Report her and get this fixed because it canup your entire future.

In addition to being initiallyrejected, if your credit goes toor you start racking up significant debt even after you've been given the clearance, they can and will yank it right back.

I've heard of SES's losing their clearance and ultimately their jobs because they lost control of their finances.

Sorry man but yourcommitted. She lied on a credit application. She can pull the family card all she wants but a mother simply does not do this to their child. Period. She wayyy overstepped a boundary. Loving someone sometimes consists of letting them face the consequences of their actions.
