= Using a VPS as a dynamicDNS for my home server? =

![ ](httpswww.redditstatic.com/desktop2x/img/renderTimingPixel.png)

I don't know much of networking so don't be rude.

I have a home server from which i would like to access from outside my network, I know there are other alternatives, but i want to be able to have as much control as I can and also not paying for a domain, I would like to expose my home server through the VPS IP.

Is this Possible? How can I do it?

Thanks!

not paying for a domain

I am not sure why paying for a VPS is fine then? Both allow you to create/access broader services.

And specially when you start having multiple http-services you'll want a domain to be able to use subdomains per-service with encryption and all that.

But back to your topic: Yeah you can setup a Tunnel and forward through that.

Wireguard is the currently most lightweight and performant protocol for this.

The most easiest way would be tailscale, but you'll loose some control as its partly SaaS.

You can also setup wireguard directly or through some managers like Netmaker on both ends.

Once you have a tunnel, you can forward stuff (DNAT) through it.

Thanks for your response!

Oracle provides free forever VPS, so I'm not paying. Probably wireguard is what I need, but I suppose it will add extra latency.

I'll try it.

FYI OP - you can get a domain for like $1/year. You don’t have to buy a .com/net/org/etc.

Your home router might have a VPN service built in and that would give you access to everything on your network.

Alternatively, ddclient and OpenVPN will set you up for access to your server. You’ll need a ddns service. Check out google domains. I got one cheap for $12 a year.

I thought about my idea of forwarding the home server IP to the VPS and I don't think it's a good idea especially when using ssh in the same IP.

I don't like the VPN option very much because I want friends to connect to my Minecraft server as easy as possible.

I looked at ddclient but as you said it requires a domain, which I would buy if necessary, then I had an idea, maybe I could I use a spare oracle cloud IP for the ddns, I'll look what I can do.

Thanks for the help.
