Featuring excellent customer service and many hosting types, TMDHosting is a web hosting service to check out for your shared, VPS, dedicated, cloud, and reseller hosting needs. It has excellent customer service and a rich selection of planswith features. It's worth noting that the last time we tested TMDHosting, the web host suffered from uptime issues that lowered its score. A recent retest proved that TMD has bounced back, making it once again a web host that's well worth your time and money

## Shared Web Hosting
Shared hosting is generally the cheapest web hosting category a provider offers. With shared hosting, your website literally shares server resources with other sites, lowering the overall service cost. This low-price web hosting comes with a trade-off, though. If your site sees a large traffic surge, your provider may temporarily take it offline because it's gobbling up resources from other sites. Or you might see a slowdown on
*your* site if one of your server mates gets a spike in visitors

TMDHosting offers three tiers of competitively priced shared web hosting: Starter, Business, and Professional. Each plan includes a free domain name, as well as unlimited storage, monthly data transfers, subdomains, and email—they're very attractive offerings. Of course, there are subtle differences between the three packages' specs

Starter (starting at $8.95 per month, or $4.95 per month with a one-year plan) has a single-core CPU and 1GB of RAM, which makes it a plan aimed at sites with less-demanding needs. It lets you host a single website and offers more than 200 website-enhancing apps and scripts. Unfortunately, Starter disallows add-on domains. The Business plan (starting at $9.95 per month, or $6.95 per month with an annual plan) builds on Starter's base by offering a two-core CPU, 1.5GB of RAM, and unlimited hosted sites and add-on domains. Professional (starting at $14.95 per month, or $9.95 per month with a 12-month agreement) tops Business by giving you a three-core CPU and 3GB of RAM

Note that these are specs and prices for TMDHosting's Linux-based servers. Windows-based options are also available at similar prices, should you have a specific need for Microsoft's operating system

TMDHosting's shared web hosting plans are quite good, providing strong competition for HostGator's Editors' Choice award-winning packages, which have unlimited storage, monthly data transfers, and email. TMDHosting's shared servers go for slightly cheaper prices, too. Still, HostGator retains the shared web hosting crown, thanks in part to its slightly better uptime and custom, toll-free number for your business

## VPS Web Hosting
In terms of traditional hard drive- or solid-state drive-based web hosting, a virtual private server is a step above shared hosting. Like shared hosting, VPS hosting places multiple sites on a shared server, but you get your own server OS instance. As a result, VPS hosting provides websites with greater system resources than shared hosting. This category's plans are generally a bit costlier than shared hosting, too

If you're seeking a solid VPS hosting plan that suits your needs, TMDHosting likely has it. The company offers five Linux-based VPS plans that include the entry-level Starter package (starting at $39.95 per month, or $35.95 per month with a one-year commitment) and the top-of-the-line Super Powerful package (starting at $129 per month, or $116.95 per month with a 12-month contract). Starter comes with 40GB of storage, 3TB of monthly data transfers, 2GB of RAM, two CPU cores, and unlimited email. Super Powerful builds on that foundation with 200GB of storage, 10TB of monthly data transfers, 12GB of RAM, six CPU cores, and unlimited email

TMDHosting also has an equal number of Windows-based servers that include the base-level Win VPS1 ($79.95 per month) and the top-tier Win VPS5 ($420 per month). Win VPS1 comes with 60GB of storage, 3TB of monthly data transfers, 4GB of RAM, two CPU cores, and unlimited email. Win VPS 5, a more powerful package, offers 400GB of storage, 10TB of monthly data transfers, 64GB of RAM, 16 CPU cores, and unlimited email

Those are good VPS plans, but they aren't quite enough to dethrone Hostwinds as the category's Editors' Choice. Hostwinds (4.49 Per Month at HostWinds)(Opens in a new window) has wallet-friendly, well-rounded VPS offerings that start at $16,99 per month for 512MB of RAM, 20GB of disk space, unlimited monthly data transfers, and unlimited email. The plans scale up to $574 per month for 96GB of RAM, 750GB of disk space, 9TB of monthly data transfers, and unlimited email, so there's room to

## Dedicated Web Hosting
Dedicated web hosting places your site on a server all by itself, so that it can leverage a tremendous amount of system resources. If you expect a large traffic volume, you'll want to go this route. Of course, you should expect to pay accordingly

TMDHosting's five dedicated hosting server plans pack enough resources to handle even the most demanding websites. The low-end $159 per month plan (or $119 per month with a one-year plan) includes two 500GB storage drives, unlimited monthly data transfers, four CPU cores, 8GB of RAM, and unlimited email. The high-end $299 per month plan (or $249 per month with an annual plan) has two 2TB storage drives, unlimited monthly data transfers, 8 CPU cores, 32GB of RAM, and unlimited email

The main drawback here is that TMDHosting offers only Linux-based dedicated web hosting servers. If you want a Windows-based server, I suggest checking out AccuWeb (3.36 Per Month at AccuWeb Hosting)(Opens in a new window) . The Editors' Choice for dedicated web hosting has customizable packages that let you outfit a server with a Linux- or Windows-based operating system, up to 2TB of fast solid-state drive storage, 512GB of RAM, and 50TB of monthly data transfers

## Cloud Web Hosting
Cloud hosting, technology that spreads hosting resources across multiple servers, is becoming increasingly common. I like that TMDHosting offers three cloud hosting plans—Starter, Business, and Enterprise—should you choose to go in that direction

Starter (starting at $12.95 per month, or $7.95 per month with a one-year commitment) includes two CPU cores, 2GB of RAM, a free domain, and unlimited monthly data transfers and storage. Unfortunately, you can only host one website. Business ($13.95 per month, or $8.95 per month with an annual plan) ups the CPU cores to four and RAM to 4GB, while letting you host an unlimited number of websites. The Enterprise tier (starting at $19.95 per month, or $11.95 per month with a one-year agreement) builds on what Business provides, boasting six CPU cores and 6GB of RAM. Discounts are available for people who sign up for long-term plans. As with its dedicated hosting plans, however, TMDHosting only offers Linux-based cloud hosting

TMDHosting's plans are solid, but DreamHost ($2.49 Per Month for Shared Starter Plan at DreamHost)(Opens in a new window) stands tall as the Editors' Choice for cloud web hosting. DreamHost has both Linux- and Windows-based packages, starting at $4.50 per month (for 512MB of RAM, 100GB of storage, and unlimited monthly data transfers). The service's plans top out at $48 per month (for four CPU cores, 8GB of RAM, 100GB of storage, and unlimited monthly data transfers)

## WordPress Web Hosting
WordPress is an absolute gem of a content management system, one that's so easy to use that it powers more than 30 percent of the Internet

TMDHosting offers three excellent WordPress hosting tiers—Starter, Business, and Enterprise—that carry the same prices and specs as the company's shared web hosting packages. Its prebuilt environment comes with many WordPress-friendly features, including live malware protection and curated plug-ins that are designed to enhance your experience

That said, A2 ($1.99 Per Month for Wordpress Hosting at A2 Hosting)(Opens in a new window) surpasses former winner TMDHosting to become the WordPress hosting champ. A2 has plans starting as low as $7.99 per month (for unlimited storage, unlimited monthly data transfers, and free SSL certificate) and as high as $24.46 per month (which adds unlimited sites and unlimited databases)

## Reseller Web Hosting
If you want to get into the web hosting business, but don't want to deal with infrastructure matters, check out TMDHosting's Linux-based, SSD-powered, reseller hosting packages. The three plans, Standard ($24.95 per month, or $19.95 per month with a one-year contract), Enterprise ($39.95 per month, or $34.95 per month with a annual plan), and Professional ($54.95 per month, or $49.95 per month with a 12-month contract), all offer sales and commission reports and credit card processing

Standard comes with 700GB of monthly data transfers, 65GB of storage, and the ability to host an unlimited number of websites. Enterprise ups the ante with 1,400GB of monthly data transfers, 130GB of storage, APCu Caching, and double the performance power. Professional has 2,000GB of monthly data transfers, 200GB of storage, and triple Standard's performance muscle. All the plans enable you to give your customers CPanels and unlimited email, and offer white-label hosting that lets you apply your own branding

New to TMDHosting's catalog are three tiers of Windows-based reseller hosting: Standard, Enterprise, and Professional. Standard (starting at $20.95 per month, or $17.95 per month with a one-year plan) boasts 400GB of monthly data transfers, 30GB of storage, and unlimited website hosting. Enterprise (starting at $23.95 per month, or $20.95 per month with an annual plan) ups the data transfers to 600GB and storage to 75GB, while touting double the performance and advanced caching. Professional (starting at $30.95 per month, or $27.95 per month with a 12-month agreement) comes with 1,000GB of data, 150GB of storage, and even more performance and caching. It also includes an SSL certificate

Still, Hostwinds remains the category's Editors' Choice winner thanks to its unlimited storage and monthly data transfers

## Building a Web Hosting Site
I opted to build a website using TMDHosting's Starter shared hosting plan. Signing up for month-to-month payments adds a $9.95 setup fee, a fee that's waived if you sign up for either the one-, two-, or three-year plans. Though I was eager to begin building my site, I had to wait more than two hours for the welcome email to arrive with my login details. In terms of setup time, that's somewhere in the middle of the pack, in my experience. Some hosts let you begin construction nearly instantaneously, while others may take as much as a day or two to get you registered on the back end

The installation comes with more than a dozen customizable templates that let me give my site a face in just a few keyboard and mouse clicks. You can, of course, choose to create a site using Drupal, MyBB, WordPress, or another tool. Overall, my experience was a simple and satisfying one

## E-Commerce and Security
TMDHosting's web hosting plans are compatible with many e-commerce tools, including Magento (a shopping cart service) and Vertical Response (an email marketing service). You can also add ID Protect ($9.99 per year) for domain privacy, SiteLock ($19.95 per year) for Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protection, and a handful of other features for strengthening the security of your domain

Magento has more flexibility in terms of colors and design options than your generic shopping cart service, but with that flexibility comes an extra layer of complexity that will demand more of your time

## Rock-Solid Uptime
Website uptime is a vital element of the web hosting experience. If your site goes down, clients and customers will be unable to find you or access your products or services

For this testing, I use a website-monitoring tool to track my site's uptime over a 14-day period. Every 15 minutes, the tool pings my website andme an alert if it is unable to contact the site for at least one minute. The data revealed that TMDHosting has really good uptime, though a few rivals, such as A2 and DreamHost, scored better in our tests. You can count on TMD to be a dependable web host

## Customer Service
TMDHosting offers 24/7 web-chat-based customer and tech support, but phone support is limited to "US business hours." I tested the phone and chat support on a weekday morning and afternoon, respectively, and never had to wait more than a few seconds before a courteous TMDHosting representative answered my questions regarding web hosting packages. Overall, I found the TMDHosting customer support experience to be excellent in my testing

You can also submit tickets to have your site-related issues addressed, or explore a community-driven knowledge base for additional information

TMDHosting has an impressive 60-day money-back guarantee that bests many web hosts' 30-day money-back guarantees. It isn't, however, as lengthy as the extremely generous 97-day guarantee offered by DreamHost

## An Improved Web Host

TMDHosting is loaded with wonderful features and boasts an excellent customer support squad. The service came close to returning to the industry-leading form that impressed us when we first reviewed it last year. Still, if you want WordPress hosting—the category in which TMDHosting previously wore the Editors' Choice crown—A2 is your current best bet. A2 edged out TMDHosting by a hair thanks to its slightly better uptime
